Membrane structure

چکیده
It is now thirty years since Singer and Nicolson unveiled their fluid mosaic model for the membrane. The model incorporates the ideas that the basic structure of the membrane is a fluid lipid bilayer, that intrinsic membrane proteins ‘float’ in this ‘sea’ of lipid, and that extrinsic membrane proteins are located on both surfaces of the membrane. The model still provides a very useful summary of the basics of membrane structure but, not surprisingly, many new structural features of the membrane have become clear over the intervening years. Concerning the lipid bilayer component of the membrane, it is now thought that not all the lipids in the membrane are in a fluid state. Many membranes contain patches of lipid in a solid-like state; the patches are referred to as lipid rafts. Lipid rafts are important in organizing proteins in the membrane. And concerning the protein component of the membrane, new insights into function have been obtained from recent three-dimensional structures of a number of membrane proteins. In particular, the structures of three channels and a pump have shown us how molecules and ions can be moved across a lipid bilayer and how this can be done selectively.

Structure Formation in Anode and Its Effect on the Performance of Micro-Tubular SOFC: A Brief Review
Anode-supported micro-tubular solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) offers many advantages over the electrolyte and cathode-supported confgurations in terms of simplicity, reliability, and efciency. In such design, the anode substrates should possess a highly porous structure, provide active sites reaction as well as serving good mechanical strength. This structure is desired to ...

Humidification process is one of the applications of membrane contactor in which partial pressure of a vapor in the gas stream increases. In this study, two different polyethersulfone and polyetherimide hollow fiber membranes were fabricated and characterized by various test methods and their performance in humidification process under different operating conditions was investigated. The PES me...
متن کاملEfficient Immobilised TiO2 in Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) Membrane for Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue
Immobilised titanium dioxide (TiO2) in membrane structures has recently become attractive. This is due to the elimination of the separation step after the process of photocatalytic degradation. The efficiency of the TiO2 surface area exposed to UV light as the main important parameter needs to be considered. The immobilisation of TiO2 nanoparticles in the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane...
متن کاملComputer Aided Molecular Modeling Of Membrane Metalloprotease
Molecular modeling is a set of computational techniques for construction of 3D structure of a protein especially membrane bound proteins whose structures can not be elucidated using experimental techniques. These techniques has been applied in the study of membrane metalloproteases for comparing wild and mutated enzymes, docking inhibitors in the catalytic site and examination of binding pocket...
متن کاملEffect of Ultrasonication on Membrane Structure and Flux Recovery for Whey Ultrafiltration
In this study, the effect of ultrasound irradiation on the flux recovery and fouling mitigation for the membranes made of the polysulfone by the phase inversion method were investigated. Two ultrasound irradiation regimes, including inside and outside the module, were chosen for this study. The experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of ultrasound irradiation on the membrane struct...
